Introducing the Nuclear Education Trust

The Nuclear Education trust exists to advance education by promoting the study and understanding of, and research into, arms control and disarmament, defence and security, with an emphasis on nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

A primary concern of the Charity is to make nuclear issues accessible to all regardless of age and ability and the greater part of its funding supports a peace education pack aimed at school children of different ages and abilities. Much of the work supported by the Charity is available to the general public on websites or via free publications. The Charity aims that such work is written to be comprehensible to the general public so as to advance understanding and knowledge of nuclear issues.

NET's survey and research into the options proposed by the Trident Alternatives Review (TAR) and their implications for Barrow in Furness is now complete.  The launch of the final report took place in Parliament on Thursday 13th December, chaired by Lord Browne of Ladyton, former Labour Defence Secretary.   Speakers included former Liberal Democrat Defence Minister Sir Nick Harvey, Labour Member of Parliament John Woodcock, MP for Barrow in Furness, TUC Head of Organisation and Services Paul Nowak and CND Vice-Chair Daniel Blaney.

The findings:
BARROW IS NOT FACING A “BINARY” CHOICE OVER TRIDENT
COALITION’S REVIEW OPTIONS MAY LEAD TO “STEP DOWN” IN EMPLOYMENT BUT NOT CLOSURE
REGENERATION AND DIVERSIFICATION ARE POSSIBLE BUT £100 MILLION + MAY BE REQUIRED
GOVERNMENT SHOULD ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY AND GIVE GUARANTEE TO COMMUNITY
